For thousands of years jewellery has been offered as a symbol of dedication. Commitment rings don't represent engagement or marriage, but they are just as valid a display of loyalty.
WHAT IS A COMMITMENT RING?
A commitment ring does what it says on the tin. When you present one to the person you love, what you're saying is "I'm devoted to you for life!"
Whether this assurance of loyalty comes years before an engagement ring, years after tying the knot with a wedding band or simply in place of a marriage altogether, it doesn't matter; the love story is yours, and so too should be the timing of the commitment ring. Your commitment ring may be steeped in symbols and fables unique to you and your partner, and thus there are no aesthetic rules. Its simple function is to promise 'forever'.
The beauty of a commitment ring? It can look however you'd like it to look!
You may wish to opt for a clear visual signal of togetherness like the traditional solitaire engagement ring with a claw setting and proud central diamond; the epitome of timeless romance.
On the other hand, you might see your commitment ring as an opportunity to think outside of the prototypical 'bridal jewellery' box and experiment with colours, shapes and motifs. Why not?
The most important factors to bear in mind when choosing a commitment ring are wearability, comfort and quality. This is a 'forever' jewel, so it must be designed to age gracefully on your finger and withstand daily wear and tear.
If both you and your partner wish to wear a commitment ring, matching or otherwise, you might wish to consider bespokedesigns. After all, your love for one another is utterly unique – and so too could be the visual symbols of it.

If you do plan to marry in the future, you may wish to choose a low-key commitment ring that won’t compete with other rings, but complement them. If an engagement ring and/or wedding bands are on the cards, a simple design in the first instance offers an accommodating foundation from which to work.
However, this doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate a gemstone or two. There's always room for sparkle!

Who says you need a wedding day to qualify for a nice chunky band? Your commitment ring can look however you'd like it to! If heavier jewellery’s your thing, you might like to start by checking out our 3mm Lilac or Scrolls rings, or any of our plain bands.
The classic eternity ring style consists of a slim band encrusted with small diamonds, often microset. Traditionally, the diamonds or gemstones encircle the entire band, the endless nature of their sparkle symbolic of eternal love. However, if your budget doesn't quite stretch to a full band of stones, setting just the visible top-half of the ring is an option. Again, the choice is yours. Most people do choose to wear their commitment ring on the third finger of the left hand (i.e. the traditional 'ring finger'), but that doesn’t mean you have to. If your commitment ring’s likely to precede an engagement and you’re not keen on the idea of stacking your rings, why not simply wear your commitment ring on the ring finger of your right hand? Either that, or you could swap your commitment ring from left to right when the question is eventually popped.
If that symbolic third finger feels too obvious, there are eight other digits to choose from. Communicate your commitment however you feel most comfortable.
